Why I Struggle With Trusting Kamala Harris and Resent Being Expected To Do So
Since Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his Vice President pick, there has been a flood of social media reactions that have ranged from excitement, to cynicism, to flat out racist and sexist comments rooted in misogynoir, anti-black racism, and white supremacy. While some rejoiced, Black Twitter erupted with criticism, accusing Harris of appearing inauthentic and voiced concerns over her track record as San Francisco’s district attorney (DA) and California’s attorney general (AG) between 2005 and 2015.
Some have also pointed out optics and colorism playing a potential role in Biden’s VP pick – arguing that Biden opted for a more digestible choice than a full-figured, brown skin black woman, with natural hair (former gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams), for white moderate republicans to feel comfortable supporting. As expected some white conservatives responded to the announcement with racist and sexist attacks to debase the Senator and label her inexperienced, unprepared, and incapable of being Vice President.
