Coin Flip: Men Surviving Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse is already shrouded in silence and shame. But for male victims, the path to survival is dimly lit and often inaccessible.

When it comes to domestic violence, people have opinions on what is right and who is justified. An example is the latest incident between Saweetie and Quavo (both successful recording artists) in the elevator.  Footage circulated of the two in an elevator scuffle. In the video, Saweetie takes a swing at Quavo. He then pulls her into the elevator and pushes her down.

Most women were appalled and undoubtedly saw the scuffle as domestic violence. However, the majority of the men felt Quavo was defending himself because Saweetie threw the first punch. Cases such as these are a lose-lose for everyone because while violence towards anyone is unacceptable when the violence is against men, it hits differently with the public.

Domestic violence against women is a common topic in the news. Several organizations help and protect abused women and children, such as The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), National Domestic Violence Hotline. Women are also typically the victims of domestic violence portrayed in television and film. So, what about the men?

If you are experiencing domestic violence or know someone who is, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (800-799-7233)
