Struggle and tribulation are embedded in the often retold stories of Black history. Here are 8 documentaries to watch this month that highlight our incredible contributions to music, fashion, sports, and culture.

I’m a documentary buff, and when I watch Black documentaries, I’m always so blown away by how cool our history is. This year’s Black History month I’ve had the overwhelming feeling that we don’t share enough stories that reflect on the positive aspects of our history. Not to trivialize the contributions or sacrifices made by the profound figures that we know and know well. While watching these documentaries I always end up thinking to myself, “more people should know this stuff”.

These films chronicle our (less often highlighted) greatness across the fields of business, music, sports, fashion, and social justice. Share them, watch them and commit them to your memory - this too is our history.

1. The Black Godfather

Found on Netflix, this documentary chronicles the ultimate connection guy. His name is Clarence Avant the gatekeeper for the who’s who of Black Hollywood. His story follows his humble beginnings in the Jim Crow South and how he worked his way up to a point of opulence and esteem. His life and work are a testament to that thing we all know - your tribe matters.
